For the past few weeks social media has been talking nothing about a man named Rodney Reed and to sign his petition. Many of you probably wonder, well, who is Rodney Reed?
Rodney Reed has currently been on death row for the past 22 years in the state of Texas, convicted for both rape and murder of a case back in 1996. He was accused for the murder of 19 year old, Stacey Stites, a woman found strangled and raped in Bastrop, Texas. Originally police thought that it was Stites fiance, Jimmy Fennell, former police officer, due to him failing two lie detector tests. Although, once police did a DNA match, it was Reed who's DNA matched instead of Fennell's. Reed had admitted that him and Stites had been together sexually which is why the evidence matched his DNA. The jury still found him guilty and sentenced him to death.
Back in 2010 Jimmy Fennell was convicted and sent to prison for rape. It was then that he had confessed to Stite's murder. Fennell had claimed that his fiancee was sleeping around behind his back therefore, Jimmy states, "I had to kill my n*gger loving fiancee." This information came about from a man named Arthur Snow signed an affidavit that alleges Fennell stating these statements.
According to Yahoo, Snow is just one of many number of witnesses that have stepped forward with information acquitting Reed. Even Stites cousin believes it was Fennell who had murdered the 19 year old girl, not Reed. On October 30th Reed's lawyers filed a petition for clemency with the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, with the consideration of Snow's affidavit. Unfortunately Fennell's lawyers dismissed the affidavit.
These past few weeks many celebrities including Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Meek Mill, Dr. Phil and many others are signing a #FreeRodneyReed petition along with many other citizens. Us as a black community must stick together and use our freedom of speech right. Black people should stop being wrongly accused of crimes just because the color of our skin.
Rodney Reed execution date is November 20th. Sign the petition HERE!
